Olympic, Victoria, Crystal Mountain

Last Tuesday I woke up in Port Angeles and drove about 80 miles to the Hoh rain forest. This was a beautiful drive through the woods around a lake. Once you enter the rain forest area everything seems to change. There is a really nice river you curve along, with a lot of people fishing. I checked into fishing but they have different rules in the national parks. And I couldn’t keep the fish anyway. The road ends at the visitor center, which is only open on the weekends. I already had all the info I needed so I started one of the two hikes. It was a 1.2 mile loop that takes you through the woods and back along the main river. Through the woods you cross a few streams. It’s crazy to see so many steelhead trout cruising up these little streams in the woods. The second hike is a .8 mile loop that shows off the best area for moss. Again you cross a small stream, this time I got the chance to see 2 large river otters swimming along. I watched them for awhile and at one point when they were out of sight a bobcat came leaping from the woods. I couldn’t believe how well they camouflage. I was looking right at it and could barely see it. After that you traverse up a little ways and get a decent over look of the stream. Here I saw about 6 more river otters come swimming up and jumping over logs. It was incredible to see this section of woods. Some of the trees were growing in all strange directions with several feet of moss hanging off them. After that hike, I left the rain forest and drove to the ocean. Rialto beach was the next stop. I walked along the beach here checking out the place. The beach is covered with huge trees that have washed on shore, some of the trees with over 6 feet in diameter. There were also some cool islands scattered about. Once I was done around there, the sun was starting to go down. So I drove back to Port Angeles and planed some things to do in Canada.
Wednesday the ferry to Victoria Canada left at 8:30. I made it just on time. It’s about an hour and a half ride to the other side. It was really cool to see some of the huge cargo ships scooting around the harbor area. Once I got to Victoria I had to go through customs. Here is where the day went downhill. I didn’t realize how suspicious I looked until after. I’m by myself, I came from Wisconsin 2500 miles away to cross into Canada. I have a snowboard in the roof, and don’t plan on boarding, and I don’t know anyone in Canada. Due to these flags they pulled me aside for further investigating. So my car got searched and they did a full background check on me. Let’s just say my record isn’t squeaky clean, so I got rejected from Canada. But the next ferry didn’t leave until 4:30, so they just let me walk around until then. So I went over the visitor center and walked around the city. They Victoria harbor area is beautiful with tons of old buildings. I walked around the Chinatown area and they back south along the water front. They have a very nice board walk that creeps along the harbor. It really seemed like a nice friendly city. I wouldn’t have loved to stay longer but couldn’t. So at 3 I had to check back in with customs. I bought another ticket on the ferry and headed back to the good old USA. The customs agent on the America side thought it was strange that I didn’t have a Canada stamp in the passport. But he understood. From there I drove back towards Seattle. I had to take one more ferry over to the main land but I had plenty of time. I was able to meet up with Jeremy Yanasak. I hung out with him for a night last time I was out here and I wish I could have had more time to hang out this year. We went to a bar and had a few beverages. He had an important day at work the next day so couldn’t stay out to late. I was glad to at least get the chance to catch up. From there I went back to Brians place. He didn’t know I was coming so I just showed up. It just so happened that his roommate was moving out at the time. This was not a well prepared move out so it wasn’t going to well. Brian was helping him for several hours already and they still had a lot ahead of them. It was already late and I knew Brian had to work so I took his place and let him get some sleep. We didn’t finish moving everything until about 2:30 in the morning. When I got back to Brians I took a much needed shower and grabbed the couch.
Thursday I headed down to Pikes Place Market. I checked this out last time I was here, but I really like the place. Tons of interesting things to see. I walked around there for a few hours then found a really cool wood working store. They sell tables and other furniture that are made from huge slabs of trees. When I got back to the car I got in touch with Kerry Yanasak. He lives in Puyallup, about an hour south of Seattle. He didn’t have any plans so told me come by. We sat around and caught up for while. Erica, Kerry’s daughter, lives 3 houses away and she was cooking dinner, so we headed over. It was great to be able to see everyone again, and I defiantly appreciate a home cooked meal. After dinner we all played a card game and joked around. Curtis, Kerrys youngest son, was coming through town and also stopped by. He planned a big birthday party for himself and few other friends for Friday night. We threw some wood in my truck and drove back to Greenwater. I met his other roommates and hung out for awhile.
Everyone in the house works at Crystal Mountain, so they were all up and out early. I made it over and it was a beautiful day, about 45 degrees and sunny. I finally felt really comfortable snowboarding again. Even last year the snow conditions sucked. Not a lot of snow and tons of ice everywhere. So this was amazing to actually have control on the hill. Curtis only had one kid he was teaching and the kid was really good. So I was able to just ride with them and pick up so good tips. At about 1 pm a strange cloud covered the sun and the mountain started to ice over again. Kerry said he was coming up for some skiing so I met up with him and some of his friends. We did a few runs together but I was pretty much done for the day. I headed back to Curtis’s house and helped out with whatever I could for the party. People showed up at about 9 and we had a huge fire going. Over all I was pretty shocked, there were about 100 that showed up throughout the night and we finished off 2 kegs and about 4 bottles of booze.
Saturday I did nothing, I knew I was going to pretty messed up so I didn’t plan on snowboarding. A bunch of us went out for dinner at a nice restaurant a few towns over. When we got back from that we watched a movie and called it a night.
Sunday I slept later then I thought but still had a full day of boarding. It was even nicer out this time. About 50 and sunny all day, no annoying cloud in sight. Curtis had to teach in the morning but had a break where we could meet up and ride for a bit. We also ran into some of the other roommates which I rode with once Curtis had to teach again. I was really glad to be able to push myself and keep up with these amazing riders. That night 3 of us went over to the bar up the street. We played some pool and had a lot of drinking. There are many many pictures that I will not be posting of that night lol.
Monday I packed everything up and drove down to Portland OR. I just sat around and watched a few movies.
This morning I went over to Orvis and talked to a guy who really knew a lot about fishing in the area. He told me where to go and what to use. I had to pick up a few things but I was pretty much set on gear. I tried fishing for several hours but I had no luck at all. I tried 2 different spots but I didn’t see anything. No one else was catching anything either. I talked to one guy in the parking lot who said it’s been too cold for the fish to bit but it’s starting to warm up and the next few days should be good. I really hope so, I would love to catch a nice trout while I’m out here.

Jackson Hole, Brians house, Olympic Nat. Park

Monday Jan 7th I was up early and drove to the Teton village for some snowboarding at Jackson Hole. This is defiantly the coolest mountain I have ever been on. You first take the tram all the way to the top. You go up and over several cliffs with open rock faces. The weather all the way at the top was pretty brutal. Very windy with low visibility. One really crappy thing was that I forgot my camera, so no pictures. This is probably the most dangerous mountain I’ve been on too, but it was a lot of fun with tons of different runs. The crappy weather slowly crept down the mountain and I decided to leave around 3:00. I spent the rest of the night driving. I didn’t have anything planed from Jackson to Seattle, and I was really looking forward to getting out of the cold. So I drove until I was about 4 hours from my friend’s house.
Tuesday I made to my friend Brians apartment. It’s always great to see old friends. He lives with some of the same people as 2 years ago. Brian took off work early and his girlfriend Delaney made a great dinner. It was great have a home cooked meal, it tasted amazing after a week of frozen meals. That night we just watched a movie.
Wednesday I got a few things done then met Brian at work for lunch. He works at Microsoft I know he does some things with X-box but he really can’t go into too much detail about it. He showed me around the place and we ate in the commons. Microsoft is pretty much set up like a small community. They have stores, banks, food, activities, all right there. After lunch I drove over to Orvis to get some fishing info. Again I got made fun of for not fly fishing, but they had some great advice. There isn’t much for fishing now and they said to talk the Orvis in Portland. But I still planed on trying one lake they suggested. I pretty much just hung out around there apartment the rest of the night.
Thursday I made some more food for the road. Once Brian got home from work we went over to his friend’s house. They all get together and play the board game risk every once in a while. I knew most of the people from last time I was here but there were some new people too.
Friday morning I tried my luck at fishing. The guys from Orvis sent me to Pine Lake. The lake was just stocked with some decent size trout. I fished for a few hours but it was really cold and I saw no signs of life. Other then the ducks that would follow me around and quack at me for food. So I called it quits and headed back. Brian heard of a cool bar that he hasn’t been to so we all checked it out. It was called the unicorn. It was a very interesting bar. There were tons of mounted animal heads all over the pink walls. Just about all the animals were from Africa. They had a bunch of crazy looking art too. They had a game room with pinball machines and some old school arcades. We all played around for awhile and had a really good time. I think it was around 12 we left and went back to the house we played risk at. His friends here were having a small party. We played some drinking games and joked around for awhile before calling it a night.
One of Brian’s friends, Jeremy lives in a house with his brother and a few friends. I hung out with him a bit the first time I was here, so I wanted catch up. I went over to his house for the packer game. Which was pathetic to watch. Jeremy had some other plans for the night but I hung out with his brother and other roommates. They were all in a fraternity together so they knew of a few things going on. We went to a party where between the 4 of us we finished off a 1.75 of vodka in about 45 minutes. Then we got a few cabs and some people from the party came with to the bars. Before go into the bar we stopped at the gas stations and slammed some four locos. We ran into a few people they knew and went to a few bars before getting a cab back to their house.
Sunday was a do nothing day for me. I think I watched about 20 episodes of parks and rec, which I recommend to everyone.
Today I packed everything up and headed out. It’s always sad to go, but it was great to see everyone and I was very grateful for the couch space. Then I drove to Olympic National Park. I went to the visitor center and got a few things planed out. I had time for a hike down to “lake” Mills. It used to be a lake but they just busted 2 dams so it’s not a lake. A really cool area. Huge moss covered trees are everywhere. A large section of the park is close off for the dam deconstruction. You can tell this was done very recently.

Snowboarding at Snow Kng, Snowmobiling at Togwotee, Hiking through the Tetons

Friday was my first full day in Jackson. I took the opportunity to go snowboarding at Snow King. It’s a mountain right in town. The morning was freezing cold, I don’t know the temp but it was rough. I was able to get away with the military discount again, so the whole day was $21. They haven’t had any new snow in about a week and a half so the runs were pretty beat up. I was still able to find some untouched spots with powder. People from town only go when the snow is really good. So until about noon there were about a dozen people on the whole mountain. This was my first time out this year and I definitely rusty. I took a few breaks to warm up and thankfully the day started to warm up too. Towards the end of the day I was finally feeling comfortable enough to hit some smaller jumps, and sure enough I ran right into a tree. So that ended the day for me. After that I did some laundry and got things ready for snowmobiling the next morning. Then I drove up to the Togwotee Lodge.
2 years ago when I was here I got a free breakfast. So in the morning I walked right in and grabbed a plate for the buffet. It’s all really good food and defiantly the way to start for a day of snowmobiling. But at the end of breakfast she came over with my bill. I felt I was just personally defeated. O well, so I got ready for the day. Last time I was freezing the entire time and over all felt I got ass kicked. So this time I wore tons of cloths and even brought extra to change into. So of course it’s a beautiful sunny day. Within 20 minutes I was soaked with sweet. I tried to take off as much as I could but my backpack was filled with spare cloths. I was still very excited for the clear skies. My first time out here I never really got a good look at the mountains, it was usually hazy or snowing. One problem is that everyone’s batteries die in the cold, so I don’t have that made pictures. I got stuck about 50 times last time, but this time only about 5. At first it’s pretty hectic trying to follow these other, very experienced, people.  For the other guys this is a play ground, for me an obstacle course. The guide, Noah was great and knew where to find the fun areas and some untouched snow. By the end of the day I was having a blast and really got the hang of it. I was about to stick around another day and go again, but it was just too expensive. So I hopped in the hot tub for awhile while I dried my cloths. After that I went to the lodge to watch some of the packer game. At half time I drove back to Jackson and went to another bar for a few beers.
I slept like crap for I was finally up around 10. Then I drove to Teton National Park. In winter there are not a lot of hiking options. There are really just 2 main hikes you can go on. The first I did last time, so this time I did an 8 mile hike to Jenny Lake. I would have liked another crystal clear day but it was overcast with some of the mountains covered. It’s a great hike right along the base of the mountains. When you make it to the lake you can really get some great views of the whole areas. On the way back I met some interesting people that I’m going to try to meet up with later on tonight.
