The Friday after Madlen left I was
expecting to lie on the beach all day. But I should have sent the weather a memo;
It was raining on and off all day. Which was probably a good thing; I had a ton
of catching up to do on the blog. So I pretty much spent the entire day sitting
in my car at the marina typing away. Then I drove to a McDonalds to post
everything and typed some more until they closed. After I posted the blog entry
Robert Yanasak sent me a message that I yet again had more relatives in the area.
I was planning on seeing a few people while I was down here but everyone was
way too busy. And I have the habit of giving zero notice to anyone. With the
new break in my schedule I was able to contact James Robbins, and we made plans
to meet up the next morning. He lives in Ventura which was a few hours away
from me so I started driving but it was already really late so I soon found a
nice parking lot to curl up at and fall asleep.
In the morning I met up with James and
we hung out for a bit. James is 31 and just had a birthday this month. He was
in the marines after high school and sense then has done several different
jobs. Including contract work over in Iraq. He was married for awhile and had a
house in Michigan and one down here in Ventura. Then went through a divorce and
refocused his life. Now he’s going back to school for nursing and has 2 years
left. Right now he’s living in a trailer, with his eye on a huge 5th
wheel once he finishes school. He and I had a lot in common and it was easy to
get along with him. We walked around town for a bit. There happened to be a lot
of stuff going on. First we ran into a renaissance fair thing going on. This
was pretty weird to see, mainly the people beating the shit out of each other
with foam weapons. Next we walked around the farmers market, then out on the
pier. There were a few people fishing out there but the cool thing to see was a
couple of kids catching crabs in there crab trap. After that we walked along
the beach for awhile where they were having a surf competition. And giving out
free muscle milk, it’s so tasty. Once we got back we did some laundry and I
took a shower. Next we drove up to an over look of the city, I think it’s
called cross point. From here you can see the whole town and surrounding area.
It’s such a beautiful place; I might have to add it to my yearly trips. His
sister Tiffany got off of work around 5. She moved out here 6 months ago to go
to school for nursing. For now she is also working as a care taker. She had to leave
right away and work on her taxes. James has a ton of movies and I grabbed a few
for the road. He had a date so headed off to the movies. Tiff came back and we
both picked up her friend and ran to the liquor store. We sat around joking for
awhile and James came home. He cooked up some steaks and potatoes for dinner then
we headed to the bars for some drinks.
Sunday Feb 10 James had a study
group to go to so we looked up a few things online and made plans to do some
hiking later in the week. I headed out and drove north to Pismo Beach. It’s a
really cool little beach town. I hung around here for a while then drove
further north until dark and made it to the south end of Big Sur.
Monday I drove around to the
different beaches along the beautiful Big Sur coast and hiked about. I watched
some surfers for awhile and checked out the elephant seals again. Then I drove
down to Marro bay and hung out for the rest of the day. This is a smaller
harbor town with lots of fishing. I took a nap at the ocean and just relaxed
for the night.
In the morning I looked into
fishing but it didn’t seem like a good time of year for shore fishing. So I
walked around town for part of the day then drove back down to Pismo area. Here
I found a nice hotel with a pool open. I hopped in the tub for awhile and lied
around it was about 65 and sunny, so I figured I would take advantage of it.
For dinner I cooked up some couscous and finished typing on my blog.
Wednesday I posted the blog and
looked up some things for the rest of my trip. Surprisingly my time is running
out lol. Its’ hard to believe but I have a lot I have planned in the few weeks left.
I also contacted James to see if he still had some time off for hiking. He said
of course, so I drove back down by him. When I got there he was finishing up a
movie, when it ended I figured we would find a spot and probably start the
drive. Instead the whiskey started flowing, but we still looked things up and
would head out in the morning.
