The day after my last post I made it to LA. And meet up with Justin and Emily. Emily lives a little north west of the city. We all went out to lunch at a small cafĂ© near her house. Sitting outside was a maybach. While we were there Emily ran into a friend. She later told us he was Phillip Morris daughter’s husband. Justin and I went to Hollywood to take some pics and see the sights. We went to the green good to have a few beer and hangout for a while/destroy the place. After that Emily was done with work so we meet her over at her house, then went to dinner and a bar with 2 of her friends. The following day, Friday, I went downtown to see the tar pits. They are very strange, it’s right in the middle of the city and they just gurgle up this tarry ooze. Next I tried to exchange my camera, which turned out a no go. I had a speck under the lens and it put a black dot on some of the pics. They wanted to ship out the camera and it would take 3 weeks. I spent the rest of the day driving around Santa Monica, and Malibu. That night Emily took us to a really cool bar in Hollywood. They were shooting a TV show there so the cover was free. We sat and hung out for the night, after several drinks they bought me, I thought it would be a great idea to try to ride the bull. That made some good pics but we will leave it at that. Saturday was Justin’s birthday and got a really nice hotel room downtown. I said good bye and thanks for everything. I was kind of a mooch and I’ll have to repay a few drinks some time.
So I headed out and went back to Santa Monica. On the way there my camera took a turn for the worse and the lens stopped opening. So back to BestBuy, this time they swapped it right out for me. That was really nice, I wasn’t to sure what was going to happen and I need a camera. This took some time so I didn’t get to go to the beach. Instead I looked up a good bar in the area and caught the second half of the packer game. I was really surprised; there were only 4 people who were falcon fans. Everyone else was for the packers. Like everywhere else the people loved to hear the road trip story especially that I was from Wisconsin. After the game drove downtown and attempted to get into a bar. The line was insane and I ended up just calling it a night.
I spent most of the day Sunday lying around on the Santa Monica beach. I went over to the pier and was able to take some pics. They have a lot of street performers there; some dancing, making things, and some with patriots. Then I walked a mile or so down the beach and back. A lot of college kids, 500+, were having a huge ultimate frieze tournament. Then some more noting until about 3:30. After that I was on a mission to get into the golden globes. At first I thought of it as a funny thing that would be cool if it really happened. So I parked near the Beverly Hilton hotel and walked around trying to take in any info that would help. Two guys in front of me told the police, blocking the sidewalk, they needed to check in. so I walked on the other side of the street down a few blocks and told those cops I was the hotel bar tender and I needed to check in. That worked but I still had to check in. for that you need a name on the list and an ID. I tried calling the hotel asking for different department; maybe someone that worked there was named Eric. After seeing about 40 Mexicans working I didn’t think that was going to be the case. So I ended up sitting next to the “regular persons” entrance for a long time. Scoping the place out and trying to find a way in. then I saw a side door that was open. There were people inside but I thought it could lead to something. Then a younger guy came outside, we talked for a bit. I told him I was just trying to sneak in. he was a PA and really didn’t think it was possible. I asked if I could come in and hang out in the side room for a while. Sense it was a security room he said “no, but good luck.” After that more sitting for some time and i came up with nothing, back to the car. Thanks to Google maps, and lots of driving around the same few blocks, I came up with another plan to jump and fence, cut a mile across a golf course and jump another fence to get into a back parking lot. after driving to where I was going to jump the first fence into the golf course I realized that this was where all the courtesy cars parked to wait for their calls. So that was a no go, back to plan A. At this time the golden globes were over and the after parties were starting. I drove the same spot I was at before and started walking back over thinking someone leaving might toss there ticket. On the walk over is when everything changed. I was walking along and I noticed a well-dressed guy behind me making a fuss. Every dressed up guy he passed he would ask for an extra ticket. I slowed down to try and get next to him. I started chatting with him as we walked. He asked one guy and the man went into his jacket pocket and bam gave him a ticket. I was shocked, completely shocked. I didn’t have a ticket, but I had a plan. So we parted ways and he went off to the party. I walked back up the street and did was he did. Asked 3 or 4 people coming in my direction with no luck. Then I walked next to a guy and asked him. He said no but I have one from last year. I gave him a strange look. He was a crasher too. Bingo. Sanjay has done this the last 3 or 4 years. He had 2 tickets from last year a UV pen for marking to get in a party, and the knowhow of the party lay out. He handed me an old ticket and we walked together. The cops on the street, flash a ticket and you walk right by. Checking in was a little more tricky. Still need a name and ID. Unless you wing it and the ticket form last year looks close. Sanjay walked right by, flashed his ticket and was in. I flashed mine and the cop stopped me. Asked to look at the ticket, said have a good time. Another ticket flash and metal detector and we were in the door. But what I didn’t know is that for all this trouble this got us to the lobby, not the parties. Sanjay has done this before. First was NBC party. We went to the table to get our tickets in. after 5 minutes of bull we had 2 tickets. We were press and our boss was waiting inside and blew us off saying it was our problem to get in. After walking the red carpet, a crazy party room awaits. Food and drink everywhere with the top people from all over. Everyone dressed in their finest suits and ties, or dresses. Everyone except me. I stood out like a me in an A list party. I had jeans and a collared shirt. At first I thought I was done for. Until someone said “so you’re an actor”, again bingo. Of course I’m the new actor from transformers 3, with my well-dressed assistant. I used that line about 4 more times that night. After taking a lap we didn’t really see anyone we knew there. So on to party number 2, the most popular, instyle/warner. This one, Sanjay knew took UV pen on the wrist. Last year was an S so we tried that again. With a wave of a UV light we were in. and they re-penned us for re-entry anyway. This room was insane. It was sponsored by Godiva. So the first room was chocolate everywhere. Chocolate art on the walls, chocolate to eat, chocolate drinks. Really cool. The main room was a strange place with these red crystal spheres hanging from the ceiling above the bar. Here was where the people were. Celbs everywhere. Sanjay could name them and pick them out with ease. I sucked, I couldn’t tell anyone, everyone looked important. I got a pic with Dane Cook, turtle from entourage and a few others. I saw the main guy from scrubs too. After a few drinks and a lap around the party it was time for number 3, AMC. To get in here you needed a name and ID to get a wrist band. There was a large line and the people at the desk were overwhelmed. I noticed this and one quick sleight of hand and we had 2 wrist bands. We went into the bathroom and put them on. Once you have it on they open the velvet ropes for you. This was outside in the court yard, covered by two huge see through tents. Tons of people here too. Right away I got a pic with Paris Hilton, i saw the guy from twilight. We met up with Sanjay’s old boss who was invited. All along this we ran into 2 groups of people Sanjay knew were crashers. Again, get a drink take a lap, next. By now it was getting late. We wanted to get into the HBO party but they closed down early, like 11:45. So we went back to instyle. This time here we saw Heidi Klum and seal, but there security wouldn’t let us take a pic. I got a few pics with famous people I really didn’t recognize but I knew their names. The only person who didnt take a pic with me that i asked what the chick from precious lol. And standing out like a sore thumb turned out for the better. Guys thought it was great that I could pull it off and they “didn’t have the balls” to come dressed like me. At the end of the night I was passing one guy who asked “how did you do it, I’ve seen you and every party, you should be on my show.” So the guys all loved it and the ladies definitely enjoyed to see someone stand out in the crowd of stiffs. So the guy dressed from head to toe form goodwill was handing out hugs like they were going out of style. After talking to a bunch of people it was closing time. As we walked through the lobby I ran into one well-dressed man. It was the same guy I talked to on the street who made this all possible. He was shocked to see me and when I told him I got into 3 parties he gave me the wink and a nod.
There were 4 after parties and you need separate tickets to get in each. so with some cleverness and daring were found our way into 3. The huge stars just walk the red carpets at each party and leave, so they were gone by the time we got in. On the walk back to the car we exchanged info and I will be sending him my pics and him to me. The rest of the walk back I just laughed the whole way. To add some more luck to the night I found $20 on the sidewalk. This night was unbelievable. What started off as a fun little story turned into a heart pounding dream. But for me that was enough of LA for a while. Back on the road. But who knows, there’s always next year.
